Corning Country Festival Glass Cannisters

Mr. SixBalloons and I hit up a great garage sale in downtown Vancouver this summer. It was held just outside a large apartment building on a busy urban street corner. The seller tweeted photos and updates before and during the sale, so it felt like a garage sale from the future. Haha.

Among her many awesome items, I had my eye on these Country Festival Bluebird glass cannisters. Have you ever seen anything like it? This pattern is normally seen on Corningware pieces, which I've begrudgingly passed on before.

This pattern is so cute and whimsical. I definitely don't want to add more to my already good-sized Corningware collection in the blue cornflower pattern, so I'm glad I was able to get these practical pieces instead.

The cork stoppers are also in good shape, which is nice. I am thinking of keeping rice in the tall one, and perhaps steel cut oats in the shorty. I paid $3 for the pair - the pricing at this sale was great!

I wonder if these were produced by Corning. There are no markings, but the print and the pieces themselves are beautiful and in great shape!

Corningware 3-Cup Teapot New in Box

Now that Springtime is here, it seems that all the annual rummage sales and church thrift fairs are in full swing. I showed up fairly late to one on the weekend, expecting it to have been picked clean.

Instead, I found this lovely little three cup Corningware "Teamaker", brand new in its vintage box! If you have seen my little Corningware collection, you might know that I love this blue cornflower pattern, and already own the 6-cup teapot. I use it as a water kettle and it sits on my stove regularly.

It came with the original pamphlet which reads: "Let's Get Better Acquainted. Spend a few minutes reading this booklet about the Use and Care of Corningware Beverage Makers and Servers". This is actually the first time I had seen an original box, nevermind the original manual!

The great thing about vintage Corningware is its durability, so I'll be making use of this piece in my kitchen!

Leftover Turkey Salad Sandwiches

I hope everyone had a great Christmas! The turkey was delicious as usual, but there's always leftover turkey to deal with. When I was a kid, we loved Mom's turkey salad sandwiches - even after eating them for a full week's worth of lunches. I made use of my kitchen's vintage goodies to whip up a batch this afternoon.

I pulled out the large Corningware pot and my vintage Copco 109E cast iron enamelled skillet (I love the red colour and should probably share more pics of this beauty in the future). I've tried tearing the turkey meat using a couple of forks in the past, but with a large amount, you can't beat the dexterity of using your own bare hands.

After adding olive oil and salt to the skillet, I threw in three stalks of green onions, chopped, into the pan. Once they are wilted and coated with olive oil and salt, they are ready to be added to the big batch of shredded turkey meat along with a couple tablespoons of Miracle Whip.

Some liberal mixing ensues, and Voila! That was our delicious lunch today! It seems that we have enough for the rest of the week too. Some things never change.  =)

Value Vintage Housewares!

On my way home from work, I decided to make a quick dash into my neighbourhood Value Village. I was pleasantly surprised (ok, I was super excited) when I saw the sign on the door reading "Manager's Special Today Only! 30% off All Housewares!" My pet peeve with Value Village is how some items are badly overpriced.

The first thing I spotted was a flamingo pink Pyrex round casserole dish which has been sitting at the store for about two weeks... reason? It has baked on stains all over it and is still priced at $5.99. I moved on and was rewarded with a couple of vintage diet pepsi glasses, 70 cents a piece with the discount! I looked on ebay for more information and found that they were calling these "slim" tumblers and some of them had "One Calorie" written on them.


These will go well with an old Pepsi bottle I kept for many years. You know, from my "private collection", haha.


We have just finished building our deck and purchased a barbecue on the weekend. I spotted a nice BBQ fork in great condition. It has a really nice wood handle and even has its' original Woodwards Department store sticker on it. It's made in Canada and seems to be of nice quality. The leather hanger looks quite cracked so I think I will cut that off.


Usually when I have time, I double back over the shelves that I just checked out, to make sure there isn't a little gem hidden away. I realized that one of the staffers just unloaded a cart with THREE vintage corningware round pots! They were in great condition and were $6 each, less 30%. I stacked them up to see how they would look and swooned a bit. Realizing that I don't really need three very similar pots, I settled on buying one 750mL pot that should come in handy. When I was in the checkout line, a lady mentioned that it was such a pretty pattern and in such great shape. I almost turned back to the housewares section and picked up the other two, but I restrained myself!


The last item I saw when I was about to wrap things up was a vintage mustard coloured fondue set.


Not only was it in its original box, it had its wood fondue forks in their original bag and had the warming rack and burner. It was missing it's bottom plate but for $3.50, I'm not complaining.


That was a great day at Value Village. I purchased all these goods for about $11 total but I sure have a lot of dish washing to do.

Corningware Cornflower Casseroles and Teapot

Did everyone who grew up in the 80s have Corningware in their house?



My mom still uses her set for casseroles and the like. You can't beat its ability to go from the stovetop to table to fridge. Now that I'm cooking on my own, I find myself wanting to replicate my mom's recipes to satisfy cravings for home cooking.

I picked up three casserole dishes and a little cute accompaniment from a craigslist seller. I use them regularly, especially since the lids make them so convenient for both leftovers and holding foods as I marinade them.

A couple of people purchased the new French White Corningware sets for us on our wedding day. Much as I am grateful for the presents, I find that they are heavy compared to the vintage versions, so we get less use out of them... And the blue cornflower detail on the "old" set is so charming too.

A recent trip to Value Village scored a nice find to add to my collection - a 6 Cup water kettle that we never had at home. Heats up nice and quick and was in great condition for the $5 price tag.
